The Freedom of Flight Pavilion will reflect the impact that aviation has had on protecting and defending the basic freedoms embodied in the United States Constitution, but also acknowledges how commercial aviation has advanced our ability to enjoy the freedom to travel and conduct commerce on a national and global basis.
The Pavilion will be located just west of the valet building, immediately adjacent to the northern terminus of the Regional Intermodal Transportation Center (RITC) elevated walkway. The pavilion will be approximately 7,000 square feet and will feature between 14,000 and 28,000 decorative bricks that are available for purchase and dedication by sponsors. These bricks will be a unique way to honor the memory of a loved one or of a former Lockheed employee; commemorate a special Airport event; honor businesses, not-for-profit organizations, athletic teams, etc.; recognize civic clubs and social groups; and give an unforgettable gift.
Information about participation and involvement will be forthcoming as the program continues to develop. If you would like to receive more information about this program, or wish to express interest in participating, please contact the Airport (mailto:answers@bur.org) with "HARP Brick Information" in your email subject line.

Burbank Bob Hope Airport Continues Community Outreach Activities
The Airport hosted two luncheons this month with the aim of increasing awareness of the Airport and forging business partnerships within the greater Los Angeles region. On March 6, the Airport hosted the Travel and Tourism Marketing Association (TTMA), an organization that included representatives from regional hotels, theme parks, museums, and other recreational facilities. "I was particularly impressed with the many public transportation options available. This, together with the completion of the Regional Intermodal Transportation Center, will surely bring an increase in popularity and use for the airport," said TTMA President David Singleman.
On March 13, Santa Clarita business owners, city department heads, and media representatives were invited to the Airport’s first Santa Clarita Day. Both luncheons included a presentation on the Airport and an airfield tour.
The outreach includes daily Airport visitors, too, who now see a series of new pole banners along the entrance roadway leading up to the terminal, each highlighting one of Burbank Bob Hope Airport’s 11 nonstop destinations: Denver, Las Vegas, New York, Oakland, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle.

Wings for Autism to Take Flight at Airport
On May 4, a Wings for Autism event will take place at Burbank Bob Hope Airport, specifically designed for families with children with autism to help ease the stress of flying. JetBlue Airways will sponsor the event with the support and partnership of the Airport, Pacific Child and Family Associates of Glendale, and Autistic Love Society.
The Wings for Autism event will provide a unique opportunity for the families and children impacted by autism to do a full scale dress rehearsal before an actual trip. Families will be able to familiarize themselves with airport, travel, and security procedures as children practice entering the Airport, checking in at the ticket counter, checking bags, going through TSA screening at security checkpoints, and boarding a JetBlue aircraft. The overall goal is to provide a positive travel experience for families traveling with children with autism.
Applications will be accepted through Pacific Child and Family Associates.

Beginning April 14, Southwest will offer direct (one stop, no plane change) flights from Burbank Bob Hope Airport to Indianapolis, Louisville, Atlanta, Chicago Midway, Houston, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Austin, and Boise. To check flight times and availability, visit www.southwest.com (http://www.southwest.com).
The Commemorative Air Force Airpower History Tour stopped at Atlantic Aviation from March 21 through 24. Planes on display included the B-29 and other World War II-era airplanes. For an additional fee, tour visitors could take brief rides on several of the historic planes. To see photos of the event, visit the Airport’s official Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/bobhopeairport).
Congratulations to Officer Jolene Dolan, who was named the 2012 Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority Police Officer of the Year. 2013 Tower Banner Student Art Contest Winners Announced
On March 4, the high school student winners and finalists of the Burbank Bob Hope Airport 2013 Tower Banner Student Art Contest presented their artwork at the Airport Authority meeting. The winners were chosen from 186 entries across the Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena Unified School Districts. The students were joined by their art teachers and district art coordinators, along with many of the students’ proud parents.
The winning artwork from each school district is displayed on the façade of the Airport terminal for a period of approximately three months. The winning entries are rotated among Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena. This year, Pasadena Unified School District’s winning banner, created by Sadie Goff from Pasadena High School, will be the first to be displayed on the tower, beginning September 2013. Burbank Unified School District’s winning banner, created by Jordan Lopez, Melissa Alfaro, Shushanik Hovakimyan, Rachel Verharts, Daniel Kerkotchian, and Breanna French of John Burroughs High School, will be displayed beginning December 2013. Glendale Unified School District’s winning banner, created by Nam Woo Kil of Crescenta Valley High School, will be displayed starting March 2014.
Second and third place winners, along with the first place winners, will be displayed in Terminal B with background information about the contest beginning September 2013. Each school district will also receive $3,000 to help support and promote the districts’ education programs for the arts.
This is the sixth year the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority has invited high school students to enter the Tower Banner Student Art Contest. This year’s aviation theme was “The Sky’s the Limit.” To view all the winning artwork, visit the Airport’s website.

The article highlights (http://la.curbed.com/archives/2013/01/burbank_airport_working_on_developing_land_improving_transit.php) the Airport’s involvement in improving multi-modal transit connections, especially in regards to regional rail and bus rapid transit (BRT) options. Amtrak and Metrolink both currently have Ventura Line stops at the Bob Hope Airport Train Station, and the Orange Line BRT connects the West Valley to the North Hollywood Red Line Station, only 3.3 miles from the Airport.
The Authority approved a $970,000 contract in January to acoustically treat 32 homes in the Airport’s Residential Acoustical Treatment Program (RATP).
Burbank Bob Hope Airport: A Year in Review
Burbank Bob Hope Airport has experienced several important changes and developments over the past year. Most notably, the Airport began work on two major projects aimed at improving convenience for passengers. On July 6, the Airport broke ground to formally begin construction of the Regional Intermodal Transportation Center (RITC), a multi-level transit hub and rental car facility that will provide travelers with easy access to both the Airport terminal and local public transportation options. The RITC is expected to open in the summer of 2014.
The Airport also began work on the installation of a Common Use Passenger Processing System (CUPPS) in August. The system, which will provide passengers with more access to convenient self-service flight check-ins and flight information displays, will also allow airlines to operate at all gates and counter positions. Travelers will find that instead of having to locate an airline-specific check-in kiosk, all kiosks in the terminal will permit check-in with all airlines. CUPPS is expected to be fully operational in the fall of 2013.
This year also brought some changes to the Airport’s air carrier service. In February, American Airlines discontinued service at the Airport, and in early December, jetBlue Airways announced that, effective January 7, 2013, it was reducing its service to one daily flight along the Burbank-JFK route as well as eliminating the daily flight to Las Vegas. Despite these changes, the core schedule along the West Coast, with direct and connecting flights throughout the country, is excellent. Burbank Bob Hope Airport remains your community’s close, convenient, comfortable airport!
Airport Employees’ Charitable Efforts Help Children in Need
On December 14, members of the Burbank Bob Hope Airport Holiday Charity Committee visited the Glendale Salvation Army’s Zone Academy for Children. In addition to presenting the Zone Academy with five new laptops, school supplies, and sports equipment, the Charity Committee provided dinner and craft activities for the approximately 60 children in attendance. The Airport Police and Fire Departments also demonstrated the use of their equipment. Altogether, the Charity Committee raised more than $2,300 for the Zone Academy through various fundraising efforts.
A Year of Community Involvement
The Authority, Airport staff, and Airport tenants continue to donate their time, effort, and resources to benefit the community. For the fifth year, high school artists in Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena competed for the honor of having their work displayed on the Burbank Bob Hope Airport Terminal Tower, creating art around the theme of “Cleared for Take-Off.” Airport employees participated in the national “Read Across America” in March. The Airport was the title sponsor of Burbank on Parade in July. Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center hosted a blood drive in the Airport’s Terminal A Skyroom; Airport employees, tenants, and passengers donated fifty pints of blood. During a one-day fundraising effort in early November, Airport personnel raised more than $1,000 for victims of Superstorm Sandy.

Some of the Airport’s daily parking rates will increase by $2 on January 15, but there will always be plenty of $10 Economy Lot space in Lot A, next to the FAA Tower at Winona Avenue.
Congratulations to Joanna V. of Texas, who won an Amazon Kindle by signing up for our online newsletter! If you’re traveling through Burbank Bob Hope Airport, you, too, can enter for a chance to win a Kindle by filling out a card at one of our many in-terminal subscription boxes.

Airport Police Help Raise Funds for Pediatric Cancer Research
On October 23, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Police Officer Association and employees of Bob Hope Airport donated funds to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to support pediatric cancer research. The funds were presented to six-year-old Burbank resident Aleyna Doche and her family during a small ceremony in the Airport Skyroom.
The Airport learned of Aleyna through an article in the Burbank Leader. In June, Aleyna was diagnosed with kidney cancer, and in late September, she set up a lemonade stand to raise money for pediatric cancer research. Her lemonade sales raised over $1,500 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which was founded in 2000.
The Police Officer Association donated $1,500 to the foundation, and Bob Hope Airport employees hosted an internal Airport cake and pie sale to raise an additional $625.
TSA Celebrates Ten Years at Burbank Bob Hope Airport
On October 10, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) celebrated ten years of operation at Burbank Bob Hope Airport. TSA staff held a ceremony in the Skyroom to reflect on the history of the organization and to honor TSA employees who have worked with the organization since its inception at the Airport.
TSA Security Director Anita Minaei presented plaques of recognition to Executive Director Dan Feger and the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority Police Department for their partnerships in working with the TSA. Senior Deputy Executive Director John Hatanaka accepted the plaque on behalf of Dan Feger, while Chief Ed Skvarna accepted the plaque on the behalf of the Police Department.

Planes, helicopters, and…cars? It’s not often you see a motorcade on the runway at Burbank Bob Hope Airport, but such was the case as President Obama left the Airport on October 24 for an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, which is taped in Burbank. He flew in from LAX on Marine One, the presidential helicopter.
All the on- and off-ramps at Hollywood Way and the I-5 Freeway are now open, with the exception of the northbound I-5 exit at Hollywood Way. They had been closed frequently over the past few months to permit work on the Caltrans I-5 North Corridor Improvement Project.
Burbank Bob Hope Airport’s role in regional transportation was prominently featured at the San Fernando Valley Council of Governments Mobility Summit on October 22. Supervisor Mike Antonovich highlighted the importance of building a new Airport Metrolink station on the Antelope Valley Line at Hollywood Way and San Fernando Road, and Glendale Mayor and Airport Commissioner Frank Quintero showcased the Airport’s upcoming multimodal ground transportation access study of bus rapid transit routes to the North Hollywood Red Line Station and east to Glendale and Pasadena. The Airport also exhibited at the Valley Industry and Commerce Association Business Forecast Conference at the Burbank Airport Marriott on October 19.

Coming soon to Burbank Bob Hope Airport: a reduced Valet rate for the first half-hour! On August 20, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority approved the implementation of a new Valet incremental rate adjustment, which will be rolled out within the next month. The parking rates for all parking lots, including close-in parking in the Structure, Lot E, and Valet are now synchronized at $3 for up to 30 minutes of parking. Additional parking at Valet costs $7 for up to 45 minutes and $13 for up to 60 minutes.
On September 20, prime contractor McCarthy Building Companies began the pile driving phase of the construction of the Airport’s Regional Intermodal Transportation Center (RITC). Between now and December 2012, 875 piles will be driven almost 75 feet deep in order to reduce seismic impact on the RITC’s structure. For more information on the pile driving phase, read the Airport’s press release (dmdocuments/9-19-12%20Pile%20Driving%20to%20Commence.pdf).

Robert Gross Park Summer Camp (http://www.glendalenewspress.com/about/site-index/tn-gnp-0722-campers-pg,0,2234214.photogallery). At the Airport Fire House, the campers observed aircraft arrivals and departures and witnessed demonstrations by Airport employees and tenants.
Two Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees demonstrated the need for X-ray security machines by hiding candy in the linings of carry-on bags and laptop cases. An Atlantic Aviation representative discussed careers in aviation, while Southwest Airlines employees taught one camper how to direct a taxiing airplane to an Airport gate. The Airport Police and Fire Departments also demonstrated their equipment, culminating with the Fire Department soaking happy campers with jets of water from one of the Airport fire trucks.
The campers also got the opportunity to explore aircraft up close. The City of Burbank Police Department and Airport fixed base operator (FBO) Million Air brought a helicopter and a Cessna Citation, respectively, to Hangar 40. The campers took turns eating pizzas and viewing the interiors of these aircraft.
This is the sixth consecutive year in which the Airport has hosted campers from Robert Gross Park.

Airport Breaks Ground on Transit Center
On July 6, Burbank Bob Hope Airport broke ground to formally launch the two-year construction of the Regional Intermodal Transportation Center (RITC). The ceremony was hosted by Jack O’Neill of the Bob Hope Family Estate and featured speakers such as Rep. Brad Sherman of the 27th Congressional District and County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board. They were joined by Burbank Mayor Dave Golonski, Glendale Mayor and Airport Commissioner Frank Quintero, Pasadena Vice Mayor Margaret McAustin, California Transportation Commission Member Dario Frommer and Federal Transit Administration Los Angeles Team Leader Ray Tellis.
The guest speakers agreed unanimously on the need for transit connections in Los Angeles County.
“One of our goals is to develop regional connections to all of our airports. Today’s dedication is only the beginning,” Antonovich said.
“For the Airport Authority, this project represents our ongoing commitment to improving convenience for our passengers, convenience for Southern California, while at the same time improving quality of life for our neighbors,” Authority President Chris Holden told the gathering.
Members of the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority Commission joined the speakers and other community leaders to turn over the ceremonial dirt using green shovels, symbolizing the sustainability features of the project. Some of the dirt had been flown in from the Airport’s 11 nonstop destinations, and soil from the North Hollywood Red Line Station, Union Station, the Del Mar Gold Line Station, and the Chatsworth Transportation Center was also added to underscore the local and national connections the RITC will enhance.
“The day of thinking of an airport as a simple place to get on and off airplanes is over,” said Airport Executive Director Dan Feger. “To that end, this project begins a new era of cooperation among aviation, highways, and public transportation systems. This is a groundbreaking not only of a construction project, but also of a new way of thinking.”
Airport Authority Commission Names New Officers
On July 2, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority, owner and operator of Burbank Bob Hope Airport, elected new officers to head the Authority Commission for a one-year term from July 2012 through June 2013. The Commission elects officers each July.
Officers chosen to head the Authority Commission for a one-year term beginning July 2012 were: Pasadena Commissioner Chris Holden, President; Commissioner Rafi Manoukian of Glendale, Vice President; and Commissioner Susan Georgino of Burbank, Secretary.
Holden has been an Authority commissioner since 1993 and served as Vice President in 2011-2012, Secretary in 2010-2011, and has twice served as President. Manoukian has served on the Authority since 2006 and served as Secretary and Treasurer in 2011-2012. He was also Secretary in 2008-2009. Georgino has served on the Authority since October 2011.
“Fly Back to School” Social Media Contest Now Underway
Burbank Bob Hope Airport is currently partnering with Southwest Airlines to host a “Fly Back to School” social media contest. The contest began on July 11 and will run through Aug. 6, 2012. One winner will receive a round-trip ticket, courtesy of Southwest Airlines, to fly back to his or her college or university in the fall. To be eligible to win, contestants must be at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled in a college or university, and list the Bob Hope Airport as either their origin or destination airport. Only one entry per contestant is permitted. The winner will be publicly announced on Aug. 14, 2012.
Those wishing to enter the contest must submit a photo of themselves wearing a sweatshirt or T-shirt from their school to the “Fly Back to School” contest app on Bob Hope Airport’s official Facebook page. Entrants must also write a caption describing their favorite thing about their college or university.
Airport Hosts Guide Dogs in Training
On June 18, Burbank Bob Hope Airport hosted five puppies from the Puppies with a Vision club of Ventura County. The puppies, ranging in age from six to 13 months, accompanied their trainers as part of their preparation for guiding a handler through an airport.
The dogs and their trainers were led through the Airport’s baggage claim areas, the ticketing area, the security line, and one of the Airport’s restaurants. Land Side Operations Manager Tom Janowitz and Public Relations Manager Lucy Burghdorf ensured that the puppies-in-training experienced true-to-life airport situations, such as an active baggage carousel loaded with items.

Cheapflight.com’s 2012 Airport Affordability Index ranked Burbank Bob Hope Airport first in affordable average airfare among the nation’s 101 most popular airports. The 2012 index is the third edition of an annual survey that measures the actual airfares that users found when searching for domestic and international flights. According to the index, the Airport’s current average airfare is $221.

The questionnaire is part of a joint outreach effort between the City of Burbank and the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority to achieve a consensus about the future of Bob Hope Airport. On March 15, 2012, a joint session of the Burbank City Council and the Airport Authority was briefed on the results of a public opinion research poll conducted about the Bob Hope Airport. The survey revealed that 92% of respondents in Burbank have a generally favorable view of the Airport, and a majority would support a replacement terminal that meets current earthquake and FAA design standards, and that contains the same number of passenger gates as the current terminal. Similar results were recorded from survey respondents in Glendale, Pasadena, and areas of Los Angeles near the Airport.
The research firm of Goodwin Simon Strategic Research presented these findings at a public meeting. Contents of the complete survey are available on the websites of the City of Burbank (http://www.burbankca.gov/index.aspx?page=1) and Bob Hope Airport (http://www.bobhopeairport.com/images/stories/reports_meetings/misc/jointairportmeetingppt3-15-12.pdf).

Noise Issue (http://bobhopeairport.com/noise/noise-issues.html) section on this website.
The Airport’s continuing efforts since its original Part 150 application in 1990 to reduce noise associated with the operation of aircraft at the Airport have resulted in significant benefits to the community.
Currently, the Airport’s Noise Impact Area has been reduced to fewer than 19.74 incompatible acres (based upon California noise regulations). This dramatic reduction – roughly 90 percent in 20 years – has been achieved through a combination of factors, including:
Changes in fleet mix by the airlines, resulting in quieter jets;

A reduced number of flights by the airlines;
A voluntary curfew between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., adhered to by the passenger aircraft operators at Bob Hope Airport for the past 20 years;
The Residential Acoustic Treatment Program; and
The Airport’s aggressive implementation of the measures in its Noise Impact Area Reduction Plan.

These important changes cost money. In the past 20 years more than $105 million has been spent acoustically treating four schools, more than 2,000 homes, and pursuing a curfew.
If the Airport did not update its Noise Exposure Map, it would be at potential risk of losing future federal funding for its highly successful Residential Acoustic Treatment Program.
Preparing an updated Noise Exposure Map also provides valuable information to the Airport, the FAA, and the City of Burbank as they consider planning for the future of the Airport.
Public participation in this process is encouraged. The Authority will be providing several opportunities for interested residents to express their views on the Study and the aircraft noise conditions at the Airport.
Residents are encouraged to offer comments and learn about the Study directly by attending public information workshops that are being held for this purpose. You may also download study materials posted on the Airport’s website.
The NEM Update is expected to be completed during Fall 2012. Information about the Study and its preliminary findings will be made available to the general public periodically through public information meetings, press releases, and on the Airport’s website. Those interested may also register for email notification of meetings with Terry Stevens (mailto:tstevens@coopercomm.net), or telephone 818.380.0366.
Documentation of the Noise Exposure Map will be presented to the Airport Authority for its consideration and adoption and will then be forwarded to the FAA for acceptance.

Airport Invites Public To Part 150 Study Workshop
An important part of the Airport’s Part 150 noise study program is to provide two-way communication between the Airport and the community it serves.
It is the responsibility of the Airport to communicate what the study is, why it is being conducted, and how the results will be utilized. At the same time, the Airport wants to hear questions and comments regarding the study, so it can respond to them.
To that end, the public is invited to attend a free community workshop on the Part 150 noise study at the Bob Hope Airport, on Thursday, March 22, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. This will be the first of two public workshops on the Part 150 Study.
The noise study, referred to as a “Part 150” study after the section of the federal code under which it is authorized, will analyze the aircraft-generated noise situation at Bob Hope Airport for 2012 and the forecast conditions for 2017.
One of the primary reasons for conducting the six-month study is to continue to obtain federal funding which, along with the Airport’s funding, underwrites the costs for its ongoing Residential Acoustical Treatment Program, which so far has insulated more than Airport-adjacent 2,000 residences and four local schools.
“The workshop is designed to allow members of the community to express their opinions and concerns, provide input, and learn more about the process of noise compatibility planning surrounding the Bob Hope Airport,” said Mark Hardyment, Director of Noise and Environmental Programs for the Airport.
The March 22 workshop will be conducted in an open house format and will include a variety of displays that explain and summarize the federal Part 150 process, the project schedule, inventory of existing conditions, aviation forecasts, and technical details related to the development of the Noise Exposure Map documentation.
